A tree came toppling down across the highway at Goldstream Park Tuesday, striking a car and shutting down traffic in both directions.
Langford Fire Chief Bob Beckett said the tree came down on the Trans-Canada Highway just north of Ice Cream Mountain before the Goldstream Park turn-in.
A car was travelling on the highway when the tree came down and drove over it, then another part of the tree fell on top of the vehicle, Beckett said.
Two occupants in the vehicle were believed to be okay, he said.
Both lanes of the highway were eventually reopened at around 12:20 p.m. after the debris was cleared. Other trees needed to be taken down in the area because they had been compromised.
In the meantime, a detour was opened to non-commercial traffic via Finlayson Arm Road, but motorists were warned to expect major delays.
Environment Canada had issued a wind warning for the region Tuesday morning.
