The City of Victoria has confirmed the temporary shelter at a former Boys and Girls Club will be open by next week.
The shelter at 1240 Yates Street is intended to provide shelter for 40 people living in the homeless encampment set up on the lawn of the Victoria Courthouse.
It will remain open for four months, after which point it is hoped residents will be transitioned to permanent housing.
A community meeting open to anyone with concerns or questions about the shelter was scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday in the gymnasium of the building.
Some parents of children who attend nearby Central Middle School have questioned its proximity to the school and say they weren’t properly consulted about the location.
The shelter will be operated by Our Place Society and will receive $400,000 in funding from BC Housing.
The United Way of Greater Victoria and the City have also chipped in $25,000 and $45,000, respectively, for upgrades.
