A gas leak forced the evacuation of a Saanich middle school Thursday afternoon.

Staff and students were ushered out of Royal Oak Middle School for a reported gas leak on nearby Travino Lane.

School District 63 Supt. Dave Eberwein said all kids were out of the building and accounted for after the evacuation.

He said he believes the leak was caused by crews striking a gas line at a nearby condo construction site.

Police tweeted around 1:45 p.m. that officers were helping Saanich Fire crews as they evacuated the school.

A large area near the school appeared to be cordoned off.

Fortis BC confirmed that the school was safe for staff and students to return to at 2:15 p.m.

Police said reports circulating on social media that the school was put under lockdown were not true.
