No one was injured as fire crews extinguished a blaze at a Saanich home under renovation Wednesday night.

The fire sparked in a home in the 800-block of Canterbury Road at around 6:45 p.m.

Crews arrived to find a plume of smoke about 20 feet into the air with some flame involved, according to Saanich Fire Capt. James Crighton.

The surrounding neighbourhood was shut down as firefighters worked to put it out and make sure nearby homes weren’t threatened.

“Looks like it’s a really good save called in by neighbours that look out for each other,” said Crighton. “We responded very quickly, it was close to the station, so I think it was a good result from a possible worse situation.”

No one was in the home at the time and it did not appear to suffer major damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
