Authorities in Regina are once again warning residents to beware of scam text messages claiming they have unpaid traffic tickets. In an update issued Wednesday, the Regina Police Service (RPS) reported it’s still receiving reports of the scam texts – which claim the text recipient must appear in court on account of an “unpaid traffic citation.” “We would like to remind the public that these messages are fraudulent and to avoid clicking any links or providing personal information,” the update read. Legitimate government agencies will never ask residents to resolve legal matters through unsolicited text messages. Elements of the scam texts include threats of legal action, arrest or additional penalties, a link directing you to “take action” and resolve the matter, and requests for your personal or financial information. RPS warns residents not to click the link, and don’t provide any personal or payment information. For those who believe they have an outstanding traffic ticket, they can verify the status of it by calling the Regina Traffic Safety Court. Any resident believing they’re a victim of fraud or who suspects someone is trying to defraud them is encouraged to contact RPS or call 911 in an emergency situation.
