A preliminary hearing has been pushed back for the Vancouver Island man charged in connection with a brutal sex assault that took place at a Denver hotel last year.
Colby Messer, 30, was due in court Thursday for the preliminary hearing but his defense council asked for a continuance.
That hearing will now take place Aug. 4 in a Denver courtroom.
Messer was released from custody in late March after posting a $300,000 cash bond.
He had to surrender his passport and must wear a GPS tracking device while he remains in Denver.
Court documents allege Messer had flown to Denver last November to attend a football game with three of his friends when they met a woman at a bar.
According to a sworn affidavit, the 27-year-old woman doesn’t remember how she then got to a hotel with the men, but remembered being naked in a hotel room.
She told investigators the men inserted a lamp base, television remote and hotel telephone into her vagina.
Messer faces six felony charges of sexual assault. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of 48 years.
It remains unclear whether the other three Canadians allegedly involved, who are all reportedly from Victoria or Port Alberni, will be charged.
