Saanich Police say a driver will face no charges in an October 2017 crash that killed a beloved chef at a well-known Indian restaurant.
Khushal Singh Rana was on his way to Sizzling Tandoor, where he worked as a chef, on Oct. 21 when a Chevy Suburban jumped the curb and struck him on Gorge Road West.
He later died in an Intensive Care Unit at Victoria General Hospital.
Saanich Police said its traffic safety unit launched an extensive investigation, speaking with a number of people including the SUV driver, witnesses, first responders and hospital staff.
They determined the driver suffered a "medical event" that led to her losing control of the vehicle, mounting the sidewalk and striking Rana.
Because of that, police said the driver won't face any charges under the Motor Vehicle Act or Criminal Code.
Police requested a review of the woman's medical fitness to drive, which has been submitted to the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles.
Colleagues described the 31-year-old father as a talented chef who was always smiling.
A GoFundMe campaign launched to support his wife, who was pregnant with twins at the time of his death, raised nearly $130,000.
