After launching an investigation into the spending behaviour and actions of Nanaimo’s mayor, city councillors have asked the RCMP to step in.

In a statement released on Tuesday, council says it’s “concerned and disappointed” with information and reports regarding Bill McKay’s conduct as mayor.

Over seven months staff looked at McKay’s financial disclosure reports, international travel, trade missions and business deals.

Members reported back to council throughout the investigation and even contacted McKay asking for an explanation.

City council outlines a number of cases in which McKay was not transparent to council, staff or the community.

The findings include:

  • McKay entering into a non-disclosure agreement with Clipper Navigation Inc. regarding a foot ferry in Nanaimo without council approval
  • The mayor failing to declare gifts and services he received during an official trip to China in 2015
  • A former employee involved in a constructive dismissal claim and human rights claim against the city and CAO alleging that McKay disclosed confidential information

McKay tells CTV News he will have a statement on the investigation on Wednesday.
