Vancouver Island’s top homicide unit is investigating after the remains of a Port Alberni man missing since January were found near Sarita Bay.
Port Alberni RCMP received a tip on Sunday that human remains were found near Sarita Bay, about 70 kilometres south of Port Alberni.
Investigators determined they belonged to 34-year-old Trevor Ryan Oakley, reported missing on Jan. 3.
After he went missing, police confirmed Oakley had been staying at a Port Alberni shelter and mentioned to others there that he was possibly going to visit a woman on Gabriola Island, but that never happened.
His death is believed to be a homicide and the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit is now investigating.
A coroner was expected to perform an autopsy on his body Friday.
Police say it appears Oakley was targeted and they don’t believe the public is at risk.
Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information leading to an arrest and charges in the case.
Anyone with information is asked to call VIIMCU at 250-380-6211 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
