Update: A 42-year-old man has been charged with two counts of murder following a double homicide in Courtenay on Wednesday.
According to Comox Valley RCMP, the man, who was transported to hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, is scheduled to appear in a Courtenay court on Tuesday.
A second man, who was arrested on scene, has been released from custody. He has not been charged.
An autopsy for the two victims is scheduled for later this week.
The investigation is ongoing.
Original story: An investigation is underway after a man and woman were found dead in an apparent double homicide in Courtenay early Wednesday morning.
Comox Valley RCMP were called to a report of a shooting on the 2300-block of Urquhart Avenue at 3:10 a.m.
They found the man and woman deceased and took two additional men who were in the home into custody.
One of the men had suffered a gunshot injury and was transported to hospital.
Police say everyone involved in the shooting was known to each other, but the exact nature of their relationships to one another is unclear.
"An investigation like this is going to be very complex, so it's going to take quite some time to figure out exactly what's all going on," said Comox Valley RCMP spokesman Const. Rob Gardner.
Neighbours said they heard "at least five, six" shots ring out in the middle of the night.
"Wife told me to get down, because we were in our bedroom and I ducked. She was listening, she heard a woman screaming, and then there were a couple more shots," said Darrel Carpenter. "There's been trouble there a few times and actually during the summer, we phoned the cops because there was a guy there with a truck who threatened to shoot somebody."
The investigation is ongoing and police expect to remain on scene throughout the day while traffic is shut down in the immediate area of Urquhart Avenue.
Next-of-kin notifications are underway.
