Police in Nanaimo used a Taser to take down a man carrying a pump-action shotgun who pulled a knife on them Friday.

A witness reported seeing the man walking along Fillinger Crescent near Hammond Bay Road at around 11 a.m. with what was initially believed to be a toy rifle.

When police caught up to him they saw the firearm resembled a shotgun.

Two officers engaged the man, who they say then tossed the shotgun down, pulled a knife and yelled profanities at them.

One officer stunned the man with a Taser, and the man was arrested and taken into custody without further incident.

Police seized the unloaded, pistol-grip 12-gauge shotgun as well as the knife.

The man was taken to hospital for evaluation.

RCMP said any charges recommended against the man will depend on the results of the evaluation.
