Two Guelph teens have been charged with second-degree murder in connection to a fatal collision outside of Fergus that killed a 16-year-old boy from Puslinch. Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Wellington County Paramedic Services responded to the collision just after midnight Sept. 19 on Wellington Road 29 near Eramosa-Garafraxa Town Line. Investigators said the pedestrian was struck by a minivan. The teen was taken to local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the minivan remained at the scene and was not injured. Const. Craig Soldan to CTV News on Sept. 20 that there had been a gathering near the collision site, with people moving near or onto the road. “I don’t want to say party because I don’t know exactly what the gathering was for or how many people were in attendance,” Soldan said. “I don’t believe that this individual was walking from point A to point B, I think they were in the area with the group and, for some reason, on the roadway.” Police arrested and charged two 17-year-old Guelph boys with second-degree murder on Friday. The identities of the two boys cannot be released to the public under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Police have not released information about the relationship, if any, between the accused and the victim. Wellington County OPP are continuing to investigate the collision and are urging anyone with information on the incident to contact police at 1-888-310-1122. “This is a tragic situation,” Const. Matthew Burton said during an interview with CTV News on Saturday. “Our heart goes out to not only the family, but the community members and friends involved. This is never easy for anyone. And the investigators remain committed to determine what occurred that day, to be able to find all the facts for the sake of the family and to determine the next course of action, to hold those accountable who were involved in this circumstance.”
