With just three weeks left before the Aug. 21 municipal nomination deadline, 19 council races across Waterloo Region lack a competitive contest. Thirteen candidates are currently running completely unopposed. Meanwhile, six council seats do not have a single candidate registered yet. Municipal election day is Oct. 26. Uncontested Races (1 Candidate Running) In these 13 races, only one candidate has submitted nomination papers, putting them on track to win by acclamation if no opponents step forward: City of Waterloo: Mayor Dorothy McCabe, Ward 1 (Sandra Hanmer), Ward 6 (Julia Wright) City of Kitchener: Ward 1 (Scott Davey), Ward 8 (Carly Pettinger) City of Cambridge: Ward 3 (Corey Kimpson), Ward 8 (Nicholas Ermeta) Township of Wilmot: Ward 1 (Stewart Cressman), Ward 3 (Harvir Sidhu), Ward 4 (Steven Martin & Krista Straus — 2 seats) Township of Wellesley: Ward 3 (Derek Brick) Township of North Dumfries: Ward 3 (Alida Wilms) Vacant Races (0 Candidates Running) In these six council spots, no one has registered to run: Township of Wilmot: Ward 2 Township of Wellesley: Ward 1, Ward 2, Ward 4 Woolwich Township: Ward 2 Woolwich Township: Ward 3 (elects 2 councillors; only 1 candidate, Bonnie Bryant, has registered) Contested Races Outside the Region City of Stratford: Does not use a ward system. The top 10 vote-getters win council seats. With 11 candidates registered so far, all but one would be elected if the vote were held today. Cities of Guelph and Brantford: All mayoral and ward councillor seats currently have active, competitive races.
