A major dairy producer has been handed a hefty fine for a workplace injury. According to the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, a worker at a facility on Speedvale Avenue West in Guelph fell from the top of a milk transport truck on March 23, 2025 while they were collecting samples. “Gay Lea Foods Co-operative Limited failed, as an employer, to provide information, instruction and supervision to a worker with respect to the safe setup and operation of a hatch access system,” a news release from the ministry said. According to the ministry, employees used an elevated hatch access system, known as a gantry, to collect samples from incoming milk transport trucks. “To shorten the sampling process, some workers would step onto the top of the truck and walk to the second sampling hatch rather than repositioning the gantry,” the news release explained. During the incident on March 23, 2025, a worker was walking along the top of a truck when they slipped on the wet surface and fell to the floor below. The company pleaded guilty at a Provincial Offences Court in Guelph and was fined $80,000.
