A Vancouver Island lighthouse north of Victoria has attracted significant financial support from an Ontario charitable foundation.

The Sheringham Point Lighthouse Preservation Group said Monday that it has received a $550,000 cheque from the Westaway Charitable Foundation to help with restoration of the lighthouse in Shirley.

Board member John Walls said the Sheringham Point Lighthouse was built in 1912 and has helped save countless lives off the west coast of the island.

The funds must be matched through community fundraising, but the board said much of that work has already been done.

The preservation group says restoration of the 20-metre tower will begin immediately.
