A snowfall warning remains in effect for East Vancouver Island with up to 20 centimetres of snow expected to fall throughout the day Saturday.
A special weather statement has also been issued for Inland Vancouver Island.
Environment Canada says a low pressure system combined with cold air will bring an additional five to 10 centimetres of snow for the South Coast until it tapers off early in the afternoon.
More snow is expected to fall Saturday night and cold conditions will continue for Sunday.
More than 12,000 BC Hydro customers on the island started their weekend with no power. The company said crews would work throughout the day to restore power as quickly as possible.
Vancouver Island University cancelled Saturday classes on all its campuses.

North Island College confirmed campuses were open following closures on Friday.
Harbour Air cancelled all flights due to the weather.

Victoria International Airport and Nanaimo's airport are also reporting several delays and cancellations.
Icy roads led to multiple car crashes up and down Vancouver Island on Friday.
A car flipped over around 6:30 p.m. on the Trans-Canada Highway, near the Thetis Lake exit.
A witness told CTV News the driver got out of the vehicle following the crash. It’s unclear if he suffered any injuries.
