A gas line break briefly shut down a major street in Langford and prompted the evacuation of a nearby school as crews tried to repair it.
Goldstream Avenue was closed to traffic between Leigh and Spencer roads after the gas line was struck at a construction site around 11 a.m.
Langford Fire was on scene and Fortis BC crews also attended to repair the break.
A Sooke School District spokesperson said the gas smell was detected inside of nearby Spencer Middle School, prompting a brief evacuation while fire crews checked it out.
After they determined the leak was coming from down the street, fire crews said it was safe for staff and students to go back inside.
Major traffic delays were expected as a result of the road closure.
Around noon, the gas line had been shut off and Goldstream Avenue was reopened to traffic.
