The family of a Mountie killed by a drunk driver in Langford last year has filed a lawsuit against the man behind the wheel.
CTV News has learned Bradley Aschenbrenner, the husband of deceased RCMP officer Const. Sarah Beckett, filed a notice of civil claim against Kenneth Jacob Fenton in October.
Fenton smashed his truck into Beckett's police cruiser in a Langford intersection on April 5, 2016, killing her.
He pleaded guilty to charges including impaired driving causing death and in July he was sentenced to four years in prison.
The lawsuit states that Aschenbrenner and his and Beckett's two young sons have suffered loss of guidance and companionship of their wife and mother, loss of support, loss of household assistance and loss of inheritance due to her death.
It does not specify the amount of damages being sought by the family.
Fenton has also been sued in a separate, unrelated crash that took place a month after the collision that killed Beckett.
He elected to be tried by a Supreme Court judge without a jury in that incident, and is expected to appear in court in June 2018.
Fenton could qualify for full parole as early as next November.
