Alberta’s police watchdog has found cause to lay sexual assault charges for allegations involving an off-duty Edmonton Police Service (EPS) officer. Const. Alec Chomik was charged with two counts of sexual assault in relation to an investigation that began in March 2024. He was arrested on Wednesday, released on an undertaking and scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 7 in Edmonton. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is responsible for investigating potential criminal offences involving police across the province. The agency began investigating after allegations made on March 11, 2024, about an off-duty EPS officer the day prior. Investigators ultimately determined there were “reasonable grounds to believe an offence had been committed.” Because the case is now in court, ASIRT says it won’t release further details. An EPS spokesperson says Chomik was on active duty while the investigation played out. Once criminal charges were laid, he was “immediately relieved of duty without pay.”
