A Courtenay man is being called a hero after he pulled his neighbour out of a burning trailer and then started hosing it down until fire crews arrived.
Firefighters were called to the Maple Pool Campground and RV Park around 9 a.m. on Thursday to a trailer fully engulfed in flames.
One man was inside the burning unit and tried to climb out the window. His neighbour Ron says he saw the smoke, grabbed a fire extinguisher and ran to help.
“I jumped up smashed the window with my fist and I grabbed him by the hair and ass and I pulled him out through the window onto the ground, dragged him across, grabbed a hose and started hosing down everybody’s place,” he said.
Another neighbour says he was asleep at the time and Ron also knocked on his trailer to tell him about the blaze.
“I would have to say Ron’s a hero today because he saved my life, my old lady’s life and Greg’s life all in one shot,” Anthony Jarman said.
Fire crews say the man inside the trailer, described as being in his mid-60’s, was transported to hospital with second-degree burns to his hands and feet.
The deputy chief of the Courtenay Fire Department adds trailer fires often grow quickly due to the lightweight construction.
“It will be a difficult fire to investigate, there is quite a large amount of contents in the trailer for its size,” said Kurt MacDonald.
The mobile home is a complete write-off and the cause is under investigation, fire officials say.
