A doe on southern Vancouver Island can now care for her newborn fawn after conservation officers removed an arrow from the deer's head.

The arrow had entered near the deer's cheek and was protruding from the back of it's head when the doe was spotted north of Victoria and tracked to Maple Bay.

A team managed to catch and tranquilize it and Sergeant Scott Norris says removal of the arrow was quite easy because the projectile had no tip and slipped right out.

Norris says the wound was cleaned and the deer was released in good shape and is expected to be fine -- but he says hunting of deer at this time of year is illegal and violators face stiff fines if caught.
