RCMP probing complaint connected with former Calgary mayor, current and former councillors

Federal RCMP investigators are looking into a complaint connected with former Calgary mayor Jyoti Gondek as well as current and former city councillors.

It came to light Tuesday that Andre Chabot, the elected representative for the city’s 10th Ward, is connected with the complaint, along with former council member Sean Chu and former mayor Gondek.

It is possible—but not yet confirmed—that there are others.

Chabot told media Tuesday he has no idea what the investigation is about.

“I do know I was asked to provide my devices for them to look at to gather evidence,” he said.

“I am fully co-operating with the police.”

Chabot says he was served with a warrant on March 19, but says he would have handed over what police wanted even without that document.

“I am fully compliant. I have nothing to hide and I’m hoping they can get something out of it that they can utilize,” he said.

Shamsher Kothari, Chu’s lawyer, said, “A number of judicial authorizations have been apparently granted and executed and my client has been co-operative throughout and respects the legal process.”

“No charges have been laid and I look forward to a swift conclusion of this investigation,” said Kothari.

In a statement, Gondek said, “I’ve been fully co-operative and respect the legal process.”

“At the same time, this has been very invasive, and my lawyer and I will be reviewing it closely to ensure it was justified,” she said.

A phone was seized following the execution of a search warrant at her home.

The initial complaint was received by the Calgary Police Service this past fall, during the municipal election campaign.

“The Calgary Police Service can confirm that a complaint was referred to the RCMP in October 2025,” CPS said in an emailed statement.

“To protect the integrity and confidentiality of the ongoing investigative process, no further details will be released at this time.”

The RCMP’s Federal Policing Northwest Region group is tasked with the investigation.

It said much the same as CPS.

“The RCMP Federal Policing NWR can confirm we have an ongoing investigation relating to a referral we received from Calgary Police Services in October 2025,” RCMP said in an emailed statement.

“To protect the integrity of this ongoing investigation, we have no further comment at this time.”

‘Can’t be a fishing expedition’

Doug King, criminologist with Calgary’s Mount Royal University, says RCMP need reasonable grounds before any criminal charges can be laid.

“It can’t be a fishing expedition. It can’t be suspicion,” he told CTV News Tuesday.

“It has to be based on some type of information that the police are doing a search to confirm.”

Chabot’s lawyer, Alain Hepner, says he hasn’t seen anything about what RCMP are investigating and can’t comment about the case.

“For anyone in politics, this is a concern, but he’s co-operating and he has nothing to hide,” he said.

King said search warrants being executed could mean a variety of things, from progress to criminal charges, the exoneration of certain individuals or nothing at all.

Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas says he hasn’t been contacted by police.

“Because this involves a police investigation with potential legal implications, I have no further comment,” he said.
