The first cases of laboratory confirmed influenza or “flu” have been confirmed by the Grey Bruce Public Health unit for the 2026-2027 respiratory illness season. The health unit says the cases have been confirmed just as the province plans to announce vaccination opportunities for residents of the region. “While respiratory virus activity is typically highest between November and April, these flu cases serve as confirmation that the virus is circulating in Grey-Bruce and residents should be taking steps now to protect their health,” said Gillian Jordan, manager of GBPH’s Infectious Diseases Program in a release shared Monday. “Vaccination is the best defence against common seasonal respiratory viruses, including the flu, so we encourage everyone to get their flu and COVID-19 vaccines as soon as they become available this fall,” Jordan said. According to Grey Bruce Public Health, Ontario’s Ministry of Health has begun rolling out immunization programs, but high-risk groups get first priority. These groups mainly include older adults and long-term care home residents. Those who are deemed by their physician to be at high risk of “severe influenza” or COVID-19 maybe also get vaccinations early. However, as of Oct. 19, publicly funded vaccinations for the flu or COVID-19 will be available for the general public at the offices of their primary care provider, public health clinics or a participating pharmacy. For more information for when or where vaccination clinics will take place, visit the health unit’s website.
