Officials believe the cause of a fire in Fredericton’s College Hill area, which led to the discovery of a deceased man on Friday, was accidental. The Fredericton Fire Department was called to a residence on Valleyview Street around 11:30 a.m. for a report of smoke coming from the building. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire. “Firefighters forced entry in the apartment, and they located and removed a 32-year-old male and immediately provided care,” said Fredericton fire chief Dwayne Killingbeck, to reporters on Monday. “Despite their efforts, the man did not survive his injuries.” “While the investigation remains ongoing, preliminary findings indicate the fire was accidental.” Killingbeck said an unknown number of people in the multi-unit building were able to escape safely. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. The cause of the man’s death hasn’t been made public. A “do not occupy” notice is posted on the building, barring anybody from entering.
