Outgoing North Bay city councillor Mac Bain said on his personal social media page he was diagnosed with leukemia Sept. 23 and transferred to Health Sciences North in Sudbury the following day. Bain said he’ll be at the hospital for about four weeks of intensive chemotherapy with the hopes of going to Ottawa for stem cell treatment. “I’ve already had a lot of good people looking after me - Thank you to Dr. Lalonde at Northern Shores Medical Clinic; Dr. Brill, Dr. Roscoe, and the emergency department, lab, ECG and radiology teams at the North Bay Regional Health Centre. “Thank you as well to the caring West Nipissing ambulance team who made the trip to Sudbury as pleasant as possible.” “Most of all, thank you to Deb, my family and our good friends. Deb will be travelling back and forth with help from family and friends, and we’re grateful for every bit of that support,” Bain said. “Thank you also to my Martyn Funeral Home family, my good friends at city hall, my council colleagues, past and present, and the team at Guaranteed Funeral Deposit.” Bain has served on North Bay City council since 2003 and announced in July that he would not be seeking re-election. He’s also served as the executive director of the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities.
