VICTORIA - Two days in February are now filled with pink. Many don the colour on Valentine's Day, but February 25, known as 'Pink Shirt Day' carries a more powerful meaning.
Pink Shirt Day was created to make a visible stand against bullying, and now raises awareness for the issue and promotes resources available to bullying victims.
The idea stemmed from Nova Scotia where two high school students organized a protest to wear pink in support of a new Grade 9 student who was bullied for wearing the colour.
British Columbia now encourages everyone to show their support by wearing something pink on February 25. It recently created its online 'Erase Bullying' site, which features an anonymous and confidential online reporting tool for students.
The province is asking to you join the online conversation Wednesday on Twitter @ERASEbullyingBC using the hashtags #Erasebullying and #pinkshirtday.
How can you help? Pink Shirt Day organizers list five ways to get involved:
1) Purchase the official t-shirt at London Drugs to wear on Wednesday. They're $11 after tax, and money raised supports anti-bullying programs.
2) Pick up a pin from Coast Capital Savings (for those who cannot wear a t-shirt at work!).
3) Make an online donation here.
4) Support Pink Shirt Day's part-proceed campaigns (not all but some of these apply to Vancouver Island).
5) Show your support online by using the hashtag #PinkItForward
