Officials say a police incident briefly shut down all southbound lanes and one northbound lane of the Malahat Highway near the summit.

Drive BC at first reported that no detours were available to drivers stuck in southbound lanes, and that there was no estimated time of the road reopening.

However, southbound lanes were reopened just after 1 p.m. and drivers were told to expect delays due to congestion.

A caller reported to CFAX 1070 that the incident happened just north of the Spectacle Lake turnoff.

He said he saw a large dump truck turned sideways in the road jackknife-style.

Southbound traffic was backed up to at least Split Rock, he said.

The dump truck driver later called CTV News to explain his side of the story.

He said he saw a man running erratically along the road and that's when he decided to use his truck as a barrier to stop southbound traffic while police attempted to apprehend the man.

While that happened, a motorcylist tried to cut their way between the dump truck and police vehicles just as police were stepping out onto the road, causing the motorcyclist to lose control and drop their bike.

The dump truck driver said nobody was injured, contrary to reports circulating online, and that the man running erratically was arrested and taken away.

Police have not confirmed any details about the incident. Shawnigan Lake RCMP would only say that the incident was "under control."
