Nanaimo City Council has voted to cancel a wildly popular slip-and-slide event due to some of the worst drought conditions the Island has seen in years.

Citing the need to conserve water during the extremely dry summer, the City of Nanaimo will turn off the taps to “Slide the City.”

The American-based company was given the green light several months ago to inflate a 300-metre slide on old Victoria Road in the city’s downtown core.

The event was scheduled for late August.

Organizers estimated between 9,000 to 20,000 gallons of water would be used for the event.
