Police say a group of intoxicated people who climbed a downtown Victoria bridge serve as a reminder about the danger of putting yourself and others in harm’s way.

Several people were spotted climbing the Johnson Street Bridge at around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

Concerned onlookers called 911, and when police and fire arrived they found three or four people on the bridge who had been drinking.

It took about 20 minutes for police to coax them down from the structure.

Police say it was lucky no one was hurt in the incident.

“We have dealt with incidents of people falling off the bridge and being severely injured and even dying,” said Const. Anthony Norman. “Ultimately, climbing a bridge like that is a hazard. It takes police and fire resources off the road to deal with these kinds of things.”

The group was arrested and each person was issued tickets for liquor related offenses, but no one was charged.

The incident shut down the bridge for about a half hour.
