Mounties are warning parents to be on the lookout after a Colwood mother said she found a needle inside one of her child’s Halloween candies.

The nearly three-inch sewing needle was found inside of a bite-size Wunderbar chocolate and reported to police Monday, according to West Shore RCMP.

Sara Jarrett said she had concerns when she noticed there was no air inside of the wrapper before finding a small hole in it.

In a video posted to social media, she is seen pulling the needle out of the chocolate bar.

“I opened it and there was the needle, and it was disgusting. I was more startled than anything,” Jarrett said. “I’ve grown up on this street, I know this place. Pretty freaky.”

The mother said her four-year-old son had been trick-or-treating on Woodpark Drive, just off Metchosin Road, on Saturday night.

Since posting the video of to Facebook, Jarrett said she has received criticism from people who doubt the legitimacy of her story – and question why she had a camera recording the moment she opened the candy.

“It’s hard because I’ve put it on Facebook and people have been very defensive about this street, because it’s a street that many of my friends have grown up on,” she said. “I don’t necessarily think it was someone on the road.”

She said she was filming because she showed the puncture hole in the wrapper to family, who agreed it looked suspicious, and wanted to document it in case she found something.

RCMP said they're treating the report as credible and are urging people to inspect their candy closely before consuming it.
