As rain returns, fire officials have lifted a weeks-long campfire ban for parts of Vancouver Island.

The ban was rescinded in the Campbell River Natural Resource District at noon Wednesday.

Campfires are once again permitted on Vancouver Island north of Hindoo Creek, in Strathcona Provincial Park and North of Nootka Sound.

The Coastal Fire Centre said it is lifting the ban because of recent precipitation with even more expected over the weekend.

Campfires are still currently permitted in the “Fog Zone” of Vancouver Island, a two-kilometre-wide band of land running from Owen Point to Port Hardy.

Campfires remain banned on the rest of the Island, while open fires larger than a half-metre high by a half-metre wide are prohibited everywhere.

Anyone found violating the fan could face a $345 fine up to an administrative penalty of $10,000.

Meanwhile, the ban has also been rescinded on the mainland east of Moh Creek up to and including Tweedsmuir South Provincial Park.
