The St. Norbert-Seine River ward seat will have someone new sitting in it, with Coun. Markus Chambers not running again. Ray DuBois, the owner of Ron Paul Garden Centre, has Chambers’ endorsement. “He’s been helping me with events and door knocking,” Dubois told CTV News Wednesday. DuBois, one of four candidates running in the ward, would like to see road construction hours on major routes extended, and he says adding transit stops and buses is crucial for the ward that stretches past the perimeter. “Transit for me is eclipsing any other issue that I’m seeing at the door, and it transcends all ages,” DuBois said. Environmental activist Louise May ran for council in 2010, and is taking another crack at it. “Number one in my platform is compassionate and safe communities,” May said. The owner of Aurora Farm, who brought the farm to the council floor when she snuck in a live chicken in 2012, was a staunch advocate for Lemay Forest. May would like to establish an at-cost groceries program and a bylaw for trees on public and private property. “You would get a permit to cut down a tree, and it would be evaluated based on everything else that’s happening around, and your neighbours would have an opportunity to weigh in,” May said. Anita Roy is a home care nurse and says she has a lot of support from her clients. “I can take their voice to City Hall and support them,” Roy said. To address crime, Roy says instead of adding police, she’d save money by hiring security guards to do patrols. “Who also communicate with the police, like the security guard, so they can go around the community,” Roy said. Govind Thawini, a farmer who sells propane, says voters are telling him water bills are too high and he’d push to reduce them. “One said to me their hydro bill is less, their heat bill is less. One said to me that she’s going to leave the City of Winnipeg,” Thawini said. Election day is Oct. 28.
