The Windsor Celebrity Hockey Classic returns with big name alumni including Wendel Clark, Darcy Tucker, Zack Kassian, and Brad May. “Don’t expect too much on the ice,” said Clark, former pro hockey player. “We’re bad hockey players now. We’re almost like glorified rec hockey players.” Local teams who raise the most money will secure a former NHL player on their team on tournament day. But the fun begins with a draft party the night before, where alumni will share never-before-heard locker room stories and mingle with fans. “It’s a win, win,” said Joey Wilson, tournament organizer. “You’re getting to play hockey with some NHL greats, and you’re also being able to support an incredible cause.” This year’s goal is to raise $150,000 for Easter Seals Ontario to purchase mobility equipment and send kids to accessibility camps. “When you’re around other people, it’s like ‘oh, you’re just like me,’ said Eric Maclean, Easter Seals Ambassador, about the first time he went to camp. “You really are not that different. At least in the ways that matter.” Clark now calls on the Windsor-Essex community to help support the cause. “It’s a great excuse for us alumni to get together … and entertain some people,” added Clark. “Meet some great hockey fans because it’s the hockey fans that make hockey work.” The VIP Celebrity Hockey Sports Dinner is on Oct. 22, at St. Clair College Centre for the Arts. Game day is Oct. 23, at Vollmer Culture and Recreation Complex in LaSalle. To sign up or donate, visit CelebrityHockeyClassics.com.
