Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a special weather statement for Winnipeg and much of southern Manitoba, cautioning that funnel clouds could develop Wednesday. The weather agency says these types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms and aren’t usually a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado. This comes after parts of southern Manitoba were rain-soaked again on Tuesday. Nearly two weeks ago, a staggering 255 mm of rain was dumped on Stonewall over a 24-hour period. On Tuesday, the community was soaked again with another 65 mm of rain, according to ECCC. Rainfall amounts varied across Winnipeg Tuesday. The weather agency reported 3.7 mm and 7.2 mm at its stations at The Forks and airport, respectively. Along with the possibility of funnel clouds, showers are possible across the south Wednesday, with unseasonably cool afternoon highs in the low 20s. Meanwhile, ECCC has issued a yellow warning for air quality for Flin Flon and nearby communities due to wildfire smoke. Otherwise, most northern regions will see a mix of sun and clouds, with the chance of scattered showers. ECCC said widespread showers and thundershowers will fall on northern Manitoba on Thursday, while similar, but more scattered conditions are on tap for the south.
