Keep your eyes on the sky in southern Manitoba on Friday. Environment and Climate Change Canda (ECCC) issued a special weather statement for parts of southwestern Manitoba and the Red River Valley, including Brandon and Winnipeg. The weather agency said conditions will be favourable for funnel clouds to develop Friday. ECCC said weak thundershowers have developed early this afternoon in the southwest and the Red River Valley that are expected to track east. Brief funnel clouds could develop that should weaken later this afternoon. The weather agency said these types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under weak thunderstorms or rapidly growing clouds. ECCC cautions that their weak rotation is not normally a danger near the ground, but there is a chance the rotation could speed up and become a weak landspout tornado. Meanwhile, stubborn low pressure remains stuck over northeastern Manitoba Friday, bringing more scattered showers across the north. Conditions are much the same Friday on the other side of the provincial border. Showers or thunderstorms are expected across northwestern Ontario. Sunshine will return to southern Manitoba on Saturday, the last full day of spring. Temperatures will be a touch below normal, with highs expected to reach the low 20s. The summer solstice occurs on Sunday at 3:24 a.m., just a few short hours before runners take on the Manitoba Marathon in Winnipeg. Sunday is also Father’s Day. It will be a pleasant day for dad, with sunshine and a forecast high in the city of 22 C.
