After a wintry start on Tuesday morning in Winnipeg, conditions should feel more like spring later this afternoon. Despite the snow and rain persisting into the noon hour, some sunshine is still expected, with temperatures warming up to around 11 C in the city. Most southern regions west of Winnipeg, including Portage la Prairie, Brandon and Dauphin, should also enjoy sunshine or a mix of sun and cloud and daytime highs between 10 C and 12 C. Communities east of Winnipeg, including the Whiteshell region south to Sprague, will see clouds hang around after early afternoon showers pass through. Temperatures should still reach around 10 C. Further east, showers or drizzle across northwestern Ontario will end Tuesday afternoon, with cooler highs in the single digits. Meanwhile, a low crossing northern Manitoba on Tuesday will spread five to 10 centimetres of snow across the northernmost areas, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). Thompson could see similar amounts. As the snow continues in the northeast Tuesday night on its way out of the province, a second, more potent low will enter Manitoba from the west. The weather agency said the system will affect central Manitoba, beginning Wednesday morning with mixed precipitation that could include freezing rain. As colder air encounters the low, snow will spread quickly in the morning across central areas. ECCC said 10 – 20 cm of snow is possible in central regions. Amounts could be limited, though, depending on how quickly the system travels. While central areas contend with wintry conditions on Wednesday, the south will feel much more like summer—almost. Strong south winds in the morning will usher in warm air that will send temperatures soaring into the upper teens in the sunshine, including in Winnipeg. But don’t put away your winter jacket just yet—rain or snow is likely Thursday, before snow on Friday. Temperatures both days will struggle to reach the freezing mark.
