When something goes wrong on a university campus, knowing who to turn to can matter almost as much as knowing where to go. That’s why UVic Campus Security is getting a new look this fall, one designed to make its officers unmistakable in a crowd, easier to approach and more visible when seconds count. The University of Victoria is replacing its previous outerwear with bright blue vests and jackets carrying large UVic Security markings, after students and other emergency responders raised concerns that the previous uniforms could be mistaken for those worn by other emergency personnel. Campus Security responds to a wide range of calls at UVic, from helping students who have lost their keys to assisting visitors, conducting fire-safety patrols and responding to first-aid calls. “We want our staff to look professional, easy to identify and approachable,” said Jessica Maclean, director of Campus Security, in a statement. The uniforms retain navy pants and shirts, with bright UVic blue vests and jackets added on top. Large security markings are prominently displayed, while reflective material will help officers stand out after dark. The redesign also had to work for officers in the field. They carry radios and microphones, flashlights, gloves, tourniquets, first-aid supplies and naloxone, among other equipment. The new uniforms were designed to keep that gear accessible while officers are responding to calls. UVic says its Campus Security personnel are trained in first aid, CPR, basic life support, automated external defibrillator use and naloxone administration. The university says the redesign was shaped by conversations with members of the campus community, including student societies, residence staff and people connected with the First Peoples House. Maclean said those conversations have helped the department understand how its work is experienced by the people it serves. “Creating a safe and welcoming campus is a shared effort. We’re grateful to everyone who takes the time to share their experiences, ideas and feedback with us,” said Maclean. The visual changes won’t stop with the uniforms. UVic Campus Security vehicles are also expected to receive a transformation, making them easier to identify around campus. The new uniforms will be in place when students return in September, giving people on campus a clearer way to find help when they need it.
