Authorities are reassuring high school students and parents in the northern B.C. community of Fort St. John that “violent threats” allegedly directed at a local teenager are being dealt with appropriately. Fort St. John RCMP said the victim reported the threats late Sunday evening, and that investigators have since spoken to both parties involved. “We continue to work collaboratively with the school and the school district to help alleviate concerns among students and families following the reported threats,” Insp. Jaime Moffat said Monday, in a statement. “This matter is being taken very seriously.” The specific nature of the alleged threats has not been publicly disclosed. In a letter to parents, North Peace Secondary said there will be an increased law enforcement presence on the school’s grounds while the investigation is underway. Administrators said they can’t share further details on the reported “threat-related behaviour” due to privacy considerations. “We recognize that situations such as this can generate questions and discussion within the community,” the letter added. “We encourage families to rely on information shared directly by the school and school district and to avoid speculation or the spread of unverified information.” In a news release, Fort St. John RCMP urged anyone who has been threatened to report threats to the detachment immediately to ensure “appropriate and timely response.”
