A lawyer for the truck driver involved in a deadly crash in Saskatchewan that killed a woman and two girls says the man is overwhelmed with grief. Brian Pfefferle says his client, Kelly Knopf, plans to fully co-operate with authorities as the case moves through court. “Mr. Knopf was involved in a tragic collision that resulted in the deaths of three people and injuries to three others, including two occupants of his vehicle,” read a statement from Pfefferle to CTV News. Pfefferle added that Knopf sustained serious injuries from the collision and remained in hospital as of Monday morning. “At this time, there is no indication that alcohol, drugs, or excessive speed were factors. We are still awaiting full particulars of the allegations.” RCMP has said the 40-year-old was driving a truck Friday when he allegedly smashed into an SUV while trying to pass a semi on a rural road near Foam Lake, Sask., northeast of Regina. Three people in the SUV were killed, including the 40-year-old woman driving the car and two girls, who were eight and five years old. Mounties say a man who was also in the SUV was taken to hospital in serious condition and the semi driver was not injured. Knopf, who’s from the United States, as well as two other passengers, were also taken to hospital. “Mr. Knopf is a resident of South Carolina who was in Saskatchewan on a hunting trip, as he has done for several years. As a result, he has a connection to many in the area,” wrote Pfefferle. “He and his family are deeply grateful for the support and compassion they have received from the community as they navigate the many consequences of this tragedy which has impacted their community.” Knopf is facing charges for dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm. “He is devastated by the loss of life and overwhelmed with grief,” Pfefferle said, describing his client. He says Knopf is scheduled to appear in Yorkton court on Wednesday.
