A Coquitlam high school teacher’s certificate will be suspended for two days later this month after a provincial regulator found he breached professional boundaries on a number of occasions, including by giving students “dating advice.” The B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation entered a consent resolution agreement with Kurtis Michael Johnston Raue in August, wherein he admitted to the conduct. According to the agreement, during the 2024-25 school year, Raue allowed students who were skipping another class to remain in his classroom while he was teaching without informing their teachers, a move the commissioner says was distracting for the students who were supposed to be in that class. In addition, the commissioner says Raue gave a student “dating advice,” telling them they and another student would “make a good couple.” He also commented on hickeys on two students’ necks. Other comments included telling a student who complained they would never find a partner they are “pretty and have a natural look” and saying a student “looks mature for their age,” according to the agreement. The Coquitlam School District suspended the teacher for 21 days without pay in June 2025 and required him to take the course “Reinforcing Respectful Boundaries” at the Justice Institute of B.C. The provincial regulator then imposed an additional two-day suspension, as “there were significant and repeated breaches of professional boundaries by Raue.” He will be suspended on Sept. 28 and 29.
