A 22-year-old man accused of trying to abduct a child in B.C.’s Lower Mainland earlier this year is facing a new charge, authorities announced Friday. Prosecutors approved one count of possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation materials (CSAEM) against Liam Roberts Dobbs-Morency earlier this week. Dobbs-Morency was previously charged with abduction of a person under 14 years old and possession of a prohibited weapon in connection with an alarming incident reported in a residential area of Surrey in June. Officers from the Surrey Police Service were called after a child who was playing in a driveway on 136A Street was allegedly “approached by a stranger and physically picked up,” the department said in a news release that month. “Bystanders saw the incident and intervened, causing the stranger to put the child down and leave the area,” the SPS said. “A man matching the description of the suspect was detained by bystanders a short distance away until police arrived and took him into custody.” The child was not physically harmed. Police said they began investigating reports the same suspect was in possession of CSAEM shortly after his arrest, leading to the charge that was approved Monday. Dobbs-Morency has been in custody since June, authorities said.
