Coun. Anne Stevenson has announced her resignation from the Edmonton Police Commission, effective Wednesday. The Ward O-day’min councillor says the issue of detainee drop-offs in downtown Edmonton was a deciding factor for her to leave the commission. “Recent weeks have revealed the depth of challenges we face with detainee drop-offs. It has become clear to me that current correctional practices are actively undermining the city’s efforts to address homelessness and create a safe and vibrant core,” Stevenson wrote in a post on social media. “I believe this issue will not be fixed without sustained effort and advocacy, and this is where I’ll be focusing my safety priorities moving forward.” The commission sent out a statement on Friday thanking Stevenson for her contributions. “Coun. Stevenson’s perspective and commitment to the commission’s work will be missed,” chair Ben Henderson wrote. “We look forward to continuing to work with her as an elected official.” Stevenson served on the commission for five years. Her term was scheduled to expire in 2027.
