The Tseshaht First Nation near Port Alberni said it was preparing for a “serious situation” as the province issued flood watches for two rivers in the region on Sunday.
The local First Nation declared a state of emergency on Friday as the community braced for heavy rain that could lead to serious flooding.
People in the area spent three days filling sandbags to place around homes.
As of Saturday six families living in four homes along the Somass River were evacuated as a precaution for the upcoming storms.
An emergency preparedness coordinator with the Tseshaht reserve, Hugh Braker, said he expected more homes will be evacuated on Monday.
Braker said people should also prepare for the possibility that a portion of Highway 4 could be forced to shut down.
After consulting with Environment Canada and government agencies, the Tseshaht First Nation anticipates the Somass River and Sproat River will peak Tuesday.
Flood watches were also in effect for Courtenay’s Puntledge River and on the east and central parts of Vancouver Island.
