A man who police described as a “prolific offender” allegedly responsible for at least three dozen thefts across the Golden Horseshoe has been arrested. Peel Regional Police said they launched an investigation dubbed “Project Bishop” targeting the man in April. Investigators, over the course of two months, linked the man to at least 38 theft-related incidents across the Regions of Peel, Halton, Durham, and Niagara, as well as the City of Hamilton. Police said the man allegedly stole merchandise valued between $50 and more than $4,000. In a news release on Friday, police announced that the suspect, 49-year-old Anthony Orlando Monteith from Mississauga, was arrested on June 19. He was charged with 24 counts of theft under $5,000 and 14 counts of possession of property obtained by crime. Police said they searched residences in Mississauga and Welland after he was arrested, resulting in the recovery of more than $35,000 worth of stolen clothing, cosmetics, and personal accessories. The investigation continues, and police said other incidents could be linked to Monteith, which would result in further charges. “This is another reminder that retail crime knows no borders, and neither does our response,” Peel police Deputy Chief Marc Andrews said in a statement.
