A 24-year-old man has been arrested after several vehicles outside a Scarborough MP’s home were set on fire last week. Toronto police announced the arrest in a news release on Friday. They said on the morning of Aug. 27, the suspect poured accelerant onto vehicles parked in the driveway of Liberal MP Salma Zahid’s residence near Bellamy Road North and Lawrence Avenue East. He allegedly then ignited the accelerant, and two vehicles caught fire. Police said a third vehicle also suffered fire damage. The suspect then fled in a vehicle. Police later released a video of the incident. Days later, on Aug. 30, police said they arrested a suspect. He was identified on Friday as Roshvin Crofton. He has been charged with arson causing damage to property, mischief over $5,000, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, possession of incendiary material, and failure to comply with probation. The charges have not been tested in court. Police said they also seized a suspect vehicle, a black 2025 Hyundai Sonata. They did not say a motive and whether it was a targeted incident. Police noted that they are looking for a second suspect, but no description has been released. In a statement posted to social media, the Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East MP welcomed the arrest and thanked police for their work. “I continue to support and cooperate fully with their ongoing investigation,” Zahid said. “As the investigation is ongoing, we still do not have information with regards to a motive for this incident. I am sure this will become apparent in time and I will await the facts before commenting any further.” Zahid previously said her son noticed the blaze and called 911, along with other neighbours. Her family was not injured. Prime Minister Carney and Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow condemned the incident. Investigators are asking anyone with information about the incident, including the whereabouts of the suspect vehicle between Aug. 23 and Aug. 27, to contact them at 416-808-4300 or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
