The College of Pharmacists of BC has announced a new program mandating enhanced security for pharmacies across the province.

The college says that under the DrugSafeBC program, all pharmacies must have a time-delay safe for narcotics in an effort to prevent drug thefts.

The program is being implemented after what the college says was a 200 per cent increase in pharmacy robberies in the Lower Mainland over 2012 to 2013.

It adds the program has a proven track record -- with Walgreens seeing a 76 per cent drop in pharmacy robbery rates after introducing similar changes in 2009.
