Police say a man remains in custody after he allegedly assaulted a bus driver in downtown Victoria Monday night.
Officers were called to Douglas and Field streets at around 9 p.m. after passengers reported the assault to 911.
Police say the man entered the back door of the bus, then assaulted the driver when he asked what he was doing.
The man then fled onto Field Street and was arrested nearby a short while later without incident.
The bus driver was treated on scene by paramedics but was not taken to hospital.
Police credited passengers for reporting the assault immediately and providing an accurate suspect description, saying it allowed them to be on scene within one minute of the call.
The Victoria man arrested in the incident, who police say has been the subject of several calls to them in the past few days, was held in custody and appeared in court Tuesday morning.
Police say the man may require mental health treatment and recommended he remain in custody pending an evaluation.
