Police say speed was a factor in a crash that sent three young people to hospital after their car went off the road, flipping over in a farmer’s field in Saanich.

The vehicle was driving along the 1700-block of Burnside Road West at around 3:15 p.m. when it lost control, officials say.

The car then plowed into the field and rolled over one-and-a-half times onto its roof, according to witnesses.

No one was ejected from the car.

The three occupants – two men and a woman in their late teens to early 20s – were out of the vehicle by the time an ambulance arrived.

First responders transported all three to Victoria General Hospital on spinal board stretchers with undetermined neck and back injuries.

The injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, said Saanich Police spokesman Sgt. John Price.

The cause of the crash has not been determined, but Price confirmed that speed was likely a factor.

"Prior to leaving the road it was described as travelling at a high rate of speed," he said. "Without a doubt, these three young people are very lucky. It's a high-speed exit from the road. A witness described them at 30 to 50 kilometres an hour over the posted speed limit."

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor, he said.

The 1700-block of Burnside Road West was expected to be closed for several hours while a crash analyst team scoured the scene.
