‘No one is above the expectations of this organization’: Three Saskatoon police officers dismissed

The Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) has dismissed three of its members.

It comes after a lengthy investigation by SPS professional standards, with the members - two constables and a special constable - deemed unsuitable for police service, according to a news release sent by SPS Wednesday afternoon.

The three were among five officers suspended following an off-duty gathering in September 2024. Police say the two others returned to work in April following an investigation.

“The actions we’ve taken here today reflect our commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity and accountability, said Saskatoon Chief of Police Cam McBride. “No one is above the expectations of this organization or the trust placed in us by the community.”

“While the events that occurred at a house party precipitated the need to investigate, the investigation grew to include additional allegations of misconduct.”

Saskatoon police say the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is continuing to investigate one aspect of the incident.

“The decision to dismiss a police officer is never made lightly, but is necessary when the conduct falls short of the standards our community expects and deserves,” added Chief McBride.

McBride wouldn’t elaborate on the allegations that the dismissed members were associated with a biker gang, but he does say that “part of the investigation included allegations that a relationship pre-existed, and that was part of the investigation.”

He says, to his knowledge, the scope of this action has not happened previously. One of the three members let go has indicated they plan to appeal the decision.

According to the police chief, this investigation was partly responsible for changes to the SPS policy dealing with SPS member associations with groups, including gangs.

“We’ve had a very robust conflict of interest policy, but it did not include an undesirable association component, and we do have that now.”

McBride also makes note of recent media reports about displays of support for suspended members and their impact on other employees. He recognizes they can raise questions surrounding the integrity of undercover operations.

“The public trust and well-being of all our members continues to be our priorities. A service is challenged when even one of its members strays from that commitment, but I am dedicated to leading an organization that upholds the Code of Ethics we’ve all sworn to.”

The SPS has also had three other suspensions since November of 2024, in unrelated investigations. A 22-year-old Sergeant was suspended in November 2024, then dismissed in March of 2025. The other two investigations are ongoing, and the members remain suspended.

Under section 61 of The Police Act, 1990, dismissed members have the right to appeal.

In that case, a public hearing would be held before an independent hearing officer designated by the minister responsible for the police act.

Chief McBride says an update will be provided when the ongoing investigations and appeals processes are completed.
