Gun, machete found during routine traffic stop: Corman Park police

A routine traffic stop for a muddy licence plate turned into a firearms investigation for Corman Park police.

Corman Park Police Service conducted the stop on Friday, June 26 at around 1 p.m.

Officers pulled over a vehicle travelling on Highway 16 near Township Road 374, saying it had an unreadable licence plate that was covered in mud.

According to a Corman Park Police Facebook post, one of its constables noted that an infant child in the vehicle wasn’t properly secured in her car seat and offered to show the parents how to properly secure the child.

“The occupants agreed,” read the post.

“When the member opened the rear door to assist with the car seat, he was immediately confronted with what appeared to be a firearm in plain view under the back seat, positioned beside a machete.”

At this point, the safety check transitioned into a firearms investigation and a firearms expert was called to the scene.

After examining the gun, the officer confirmed it was a .22 calibre firearm.

The male driving the vehicle was then arrested for possession of a firearm contrary to a lifetime firearms prohibition that was issued in 2021. Both the gun and the machete were seized.

Corman Park police further searched the vehicle, finding cannabis and unstamped tobacco.

Police say they also found a karambit knife on the accused’s person.

The male was transported the Martensville RCMP Detachment where he was processed and release. He’s scheduled to appear in Saskatoon Provincial Court in August.
